Company History
Prolepsis Games was an idea in the works since the dawn of the creation
of Amazing Quests! many years ago, but did not gain
a name until around 1995. The word "prolepsis," although somewhat varied in meaning depending on which dictionary
you look at and which definition you read, is better translated as "something anticipated."
It is also a literary term, a figure of speech in which something that hasn't
happened yet is spoken of as if it already has. A good example is from John
Keats' Isabella, when the assassination of a character who is currently
alive is hinted at proleptically:
So the two brothers and their murdered man
Rode past fair Florence
The brothers aren't carrying the body of someone they've
killed; it's blatant foreshadowing that tells us the two brothers soon will kill
this man.
A prolepsis can also be the anticipation of possible
objections in order to answer them in advance. For a long time, I've argued
against the objections of those who proclaim role-playing games are evil or
mind-messing, so it fits there.
"Prolepsis" comes from Greek, meaning "anticipation" or
"preconception." I like the idea of something that is anticipated, and take
minor literary license with the word here.
Amazing Quests! is something I've been anticipating for a long time.
Mission Statement
Prolepsis Games produces role-playing games and
other games that challenge the mind, stoke the imagination, and keep the
creative juices flowing. Prolepsis Games strives to develop these products
based on strong playtesting, popular opinion, and heeding the advice of others.
Prolepsis Games will combat those who oppose the art of role-gaming or any
oppressive intent towards any harmless games. Prolepsis Games strongly adheres
to the concept of "Imagination Overload" — people should never let their
creative minds be stunted or limited.
Vision Statement
Prolepsis Games will continue to develop new and
innovative games and products to forward its mission, working to make them
available to anyone and everyone. Prolepsis Games will seek to push the
boundaries of what most people think of as games, engaging the imaginations of
all. Prolepsis Games will build an army of gamers who enjoy playing its
games.
