Who Are You, and What Makes You Think
You're Qualified
to Make an RPG System and Tell Us It's Good?
I'm David M. Fitzpatrick, the creator of the
Amazing Quests! Multigenre Universal Rolegaming
Framework. From my first introduction to role-playing games at age
14 in 1983, I was taken by the exciting
concept of RPGs. My first system, the Dungeons & Dragons
Basic and Expert Rules, opened up a whole new world within which I
could extend his imagination.
I'd
been writing fiction since age 7, with goals of getting published. When I
opened a business with offices in Bangor in 1996, I did so because I
realized I could work fewer hours and make more money than working for
someone else. This would free up more time to write and work on AQ!
With an office, that would give me a writing studio and a base of operations
to begin hard development and playtesting of the game.
The realities of running a business got in the way, and I
found myself working lots more hours than I'd expected. But two things
happened: I began getting stories published, and AQ! got developed.
Today, about 45 of my short stories have appeared in
magazines and anthologies in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. I'm reasonably
sure I'm a competent writer, so you can be sure that AQ! won't
feature regular spelling mistakes of grammatical manglings on every page.
I'm also reasonably sure of the depth of my creativity, so I promise that,
if nothing else, you won't be smacked with hundreds of pages of bland ideas.
Currently, I work an interesting day job as a Special
Sections writer for the Bangor Daily News. I conduct interviews and shoot
photos for everything ranging from general-interest pieces to features to
advertorial, working with two people to produce about 100 Special Sections
every year. I also edit submitted materials and crusade to ensure good
grammar and proper English make it into print.
Each semester, I teach a creative-writing course through
Bangor Adult Education, which is resulting in anthologies of the students'
works being published after each semester. (They say that those can write,
write; those who cannot, teach creative writing. I disagree. With four dozen
stories under my belt, I'm confident I can manage both.)
I bring to Prolepsis Games lots of creativity, years of
playing many RPGs, solid editing skills, and strong mechanical ability with
the English language. I can't guarantee that 100% of gamers will love 100%
of everything I give to them, but I can promise that I've tried very hard to
achieve those numbers. I think most gamers will be mostly satisfied.
