CHARACTERS
Amazing Quests! is versatile,
appealing to players of all stripes with what we call the dual-format
character-creation system, which allows different styles of players to
make characters and play with each in the same game.
Quick and Easy
Then use the Quick Character
system. It seven stats, called Categories, that are similar to those in
many other rolegames. You'll quickly generate Body, Agility, Precision,
Mentality, Image, Sensory, and Chance, add up a few sub-Scores from the
Category charts, and you're ready to go.
Long and Complex
Some gamers like complexity,
options, and lots of numbers. If this is you, make a Complex Character.
Those Categories from the Quick Character system become headers for 24
Qualities with memorable abbreviations. For example, under Body, you'll
have MUSPOW, TUFSTF, and HEAFIT for Muscle Power (strength), Tough Stuff
(for endurance and stamina), and Health & Fitness (just like it sounds).
Yeah, they may sound funny, but once you hear that BALFOO
is Balance & Footwork and PERCHA is Personal
Charm, you're not likely to ever forget it.
Use Them Together
Quick
and Complex characters can be used in the same game, allowing players of
varying experience levels and preferences to game together. If the GM calls for everyone to check a Category or Quality Score, it
translates easily. Need to check WILPOW (Willpower)? Complex players check
WILPOW; Quick players check Mentality. That simple!
Rolegamer Democracy -
What's this?
The dual-format character system was based on my years of polling. There
seemed to be a split between three groups: those who preferred simple
character systems (about 40%), those who preferred complicated character
systems (about 40%), and those who didn't care either way (about 20%).
Like many things with AQ!, the amusing Quality names were not
intended to be permanent. But after a year of heavy playtesting with
things like TUFSTF and INTQUO and PHYATT and SIXSEN, they just sort of
stuck, so we kept the universal, easy-to-identify, six-letter
abbreviations.
