PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
WRITING SKILLS
Newspaper. At the
Bangor Daily News, I wrote in a wide range of styles: news, features,
advertorial, profiles, historical retrospectives, and more.
Magazine. I also
wrote articles for several BDN magazine titles. My earliest published
writing was in an independent magazine out of Washington, D.C.
Fiction. My
favorite writing is fiction. I have had about 60 short stories published
(50 under my name and others under pseudonyms). Since 2010, I have written
an online short-fiction column for Australian Web site The Cud. Since
2007, I have taught short-story writing through various adult-education
programs in the Bangor area.
Style. Through various types of writing, I have
learned various styles, including Strunk & White, Associated Press,
standard manuscript format, etc.
NON-TECHNOLOGICAL SKILLS
Project management. At the Bangor Daily News, I
routinely planned content for supplements, scheduled interviews and photo
shoots, assigned work to freelancers, followed up with advertising clients
and interview subjects, laid out supplements, etc.
Communications, customer service, and PR. From 11
years in retail to 24 years running a business to 9 years conducting
interviews, these have been necessary skills to learn and always improve.
Adaptation. I am a fast learner and am quick to
adapt to any situation.
Presentation. Both with Web sites as well as
designed publications, I have garnered strong ability to know what is
presentable and appealing to the eye.
TECHNOLOGICAL SKILLS
Desktop Publishing
and Page Layout. Extensive experience including books, magazines, and
newspapers using Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, and
Quark XPress. I also have a strong understanding of the commercial
prepress process.
Hardware. All
aspects of servicing, repairing, upgrading, and troubleshooting PCs,
mostly as a result of building and fixing them since 1990. Previous
hardware work with older, non-PC machines set the stage for my experience
in learning PC hardware.
Programming and
Databases. I began programming in 1980 and have since programmed in
countless languages. I have fairly recent experience with ASP, Jscript,
and SQL.
Networking. I am
familiar with network protocols and hardware/wiring setups.
Web Site Design and
Marketing. Although I am a bit outdated on this, I have Web-design
experience and am familiar with online protocols. I am familiar with
online marketing of a Web site, including search-engine optimization.
Graphic Design.
Although I am not a graphic-design expert, I have experience with graphics
software including Corel and Adobe packages.
Digital Video Production and 3D Graphics Rendering. I have a background in
non-linear digital video editing with packages such as Adobe Premiere, and
exposure to three-dimensional rendering.
