Cud Flashes in the Pan - 2010-2011

Here are the installments for Cud Flashes in the Pan for 2010-2011. I appeared a few times sporadically before beginning the regular column in June 2011. Click here to read about CFP.

First fiction appearance in The Cud - (January 2010)

I hadn't given Evan any fiction for The Cud before, because I preferred not to have my fiction online. But then I figured, "What the hell." This was the first piece, a dialogue-only story in the spirit of how Terry Bisson did his great tale "They're Made Out of Meat." Terry's story has a much deeper message behind it, but I had fun writing mine anyway.

  • "Cold Talks" - science fiction
Precursor to Cud Flashes - (January 2011)

Before I started the column, Evan asked me if he could run a piece I'd sent him the year before to run in his annual "All Things Lit" edition, where anything goes. Here it is.

  • "For Mary" - sci-fi/horror
Inaugural Issue - (no theme - April 2011)

Having provided a few pieces of fiction to The Cud before, the editor asked me for some more. We put together an actual column, and agreed to do more. The first would come in June. This first time, the pieces were all super-short flash-fiction pieces, each 75 words, I believe.

  • "Sins of the Father" - contemporary fantasy
  • "The Only Way" - science fiction
  • "Why the Mage Is a Sage" - sword & sorcery
  • "Retribution" - horror

First Regular Issue - (June 2011)

Featuring horror, super hero, sword & sorcery, and dystopian sci-fi. Unlike the first installment, these are a bit longer, ranging from flash to, really, short short.

  • "Immortal Torment" - horror, 172 words

  • "Kryptonite" - super hero, 227 words

  • "Hard to Handle" - sword & sorcery, 644 words

  • "It's My Body" - dystopian SF, 1,017 words

"Final Frontiers" (July 2011)

In honor of the 42nd anniversary of the moon landing (and in honor of the number 42, naturally). This was the first month the column had a theme.

  • "Is Anybody Home?" - science fiction, 320 words

  • "Change Is Tough" - science fiction, 356 words

  • "Invasion Plan" - science fiction, 466 words

  • "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - science fiction parody, 657 words

  • "Shuffling on this Immortal Coil" - science fiction, 891 words

"Dystopia in a Day" (August 2011)

Dystopian fiction being one of my favorites, this was really fun to write.

  • “Expectations” - social SF, 250 words

  • “The Scarlet ‘A’” - social SF, 372 words

  • “It’s Not My Default” - social SF, 677 words

  • “One Man, One Woman” - social SF, 686 words

  • “Selfish Bastards” - social SF, 810 words

"Swords & Dungeons, Sorcery & Dragons" (September 2011)

There's nothing like pseudo-Medievel fantasy! Break out the role-playing game, and let's imagine we're destroying a dragon.

  • “Controlling Destiny” – sword & sorcery, 491 words

  • “The Pains of Tradition” — sword & sorcery, 526 words

  • “Rescuing the Maidenhead" – sword & sorcery, 622 words

  • “Incarnation Incantation” – sword & sorcery, 671 words

  • “The Dragon’s Treasure” – sword & sorcery, 674 words

"Halloween Horror" (October 2011)

What creeps one reader out may make another laugh. Hopefully there's both for each of you.

  • “Ethical Dilemma” – horror, 219 words

  • “Zombie Puckerlips” – horror, 368 words

  • “Haunting That House” – horror, 464 words

  • “Blood and Flesh” - horror, 491 words

  • “Revenge of a Nerd” – horror, 685 words

  • “Face the Music” – horror, 743 words

  November 2011 - No edition

Each November, the editor, Evan Kanarakis, does a "best of" edition from the current year, so there is no Cud Flashes in the Pan in November.

"Gifts" (December 2011)

One person's gift is another person's repulsion. Be careful what you wish for; you may get it. Too much sex in one day can be a pain in the ass. Those are some of the lessons learned in this month's installment.

  • “Woodland Treasures” – fantasy, 664 words
  • “From the Heart” – horror, 677 words
  • “Sudden Virility” – contemporary fantasy/adult, 686 words
  • “Fruition to the Core” – fantasy/fairy tale, 796 words
  • “The Perfect Present” – science fiction, 663 words
