Bangor Daily News

I began freelancing for Special Sections at the Bangor Daily News in March 2005 and was hired on full time on November 14, 2005. Special Sections produces themed publications including advertorial supplements, vendor supplements, features, house annuals, and more. Starting in late 2011, as the number of supplements we produced every year decreased, our department was given The Weekly, the BDN's weekly community newspaper direct mailed to 29 towns and cities around, and including, Bangor. This was timed well, because 2012 saw far fewer supplements to produce, but we were kept busy producing 52 weekly editions of The Weekly, for which we wrote features on a steady basis.

During most of my tenure, there were three of us in Special Sections. We each handled the project management and production of certain supplements, and for those we've been titled "section editors." Producing a supplement can include many things: developing stories; interviewing subjects; shooting photos to accompany the stories; research; toning photos; laying out the publications; sending the supplements to film negative; and even visiting the printing plant to ensure all is well.

Currently, this page just shows cover images of the supplements for which I've been the section editor. This doesn't count the many others edited by co-workers, but for which I wrote, shot photos, assisted in page layouts, or coordinated with clients, vendors, or others. For the most part, the following sections are those I did just about everything from start to finish (with the exception of cover designs and interior advertisements, which has always been up to the graphic-design folks). I'll eventually be adding click-throughs for each publication, where I'll list details about what I did with them and including stories I wrote for them.
